Please reach us at friendsofedenanimalshelter@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

All information that is required will be on the form located above.

  • Cats

General: 4 to 5 months old.

Why early? Prevents first heat (as early as 5 months), reducing the risk of mammary tumors and stopping urine spraying/roaming.

  • Dogs

Small Breeds: Around 5-6 months.

Large/Giant Breeds: Delay until 9-15 months (or even later) to let growth plates close, reducing orthopedic risks.

General: Before first heat, around 6-9 months, but timing depends heavily on size.

Every day in the United States, an estimated 50,000 puppies and kittens are born, yet only one in nine will ever find a loving home. This heartbreaking reality places an enormous strain on shelters, rescue organizations, and communities. While adoption helps, it’s only part of the solution. The real answer lies in prevention—spaying and neutering pets before unwanted litters occur.

Sterilization isn’t just about controlling population—it’s about improving the health and happiness of our pets. Spayed or neutered pets:

  • Live longer—on average, 2–3 years more than unaltered pets.
  • Avoid certain cancers, reducing health risks.
  • Stay closer to home, with less chance of roaming or fighting.
  • Are safer companions, being three times less likely to bite.

By choosing to spay or neuter, you’re giving your pet a better life and helping reduce the number of homeless animals in our community.
